GL1200 Caliper Rebuild and Mod

Braking well is something I tend to place importance on when it comes to motorcycles.  I had an incident in San Rafael, Nicaragua where I borrowed an old Honda motorcycle from the clinic I was working at and took off and didn’t realize I only had a little bit of a front brake just as I came up to an intersection which was filled with trucks, cars, motorcycles, and cattle.  Dumb luck was on my side and there was no harm, no foul.  I rarely come across an older motorcycle that can’t benefit from a caliper rebuild and the GL1200 was no exception.

It turns out my GL1200 had a mismatch of calipers from different year and size Goldwings.  It took a few orders to get the right seal kits that were the right size.  The nice thing about the dual piston Goldwing calipers is they have the size of the caliper clearly marked on the side.

After gutting each caliper and protecting the sensitive surfaces, I media blasted each caliper.  I also used 400-600 grit sandpaper to smooth the caliper pistons.  Each caliper bracket and caliper where then powder coated and then rebuilt.

One of the little custom touches I did was to remove the Honda raised lettering on the caliper.  I don’t have anything against Honda, I just like a clean look.  Any logos or lettering I want to add myself.
